Unique Instruments Used In A Tropical Island Wedding Band

Music is different all around the world and one of the main differences that come with the music is the instruments used by bands. As you plan your wedding, one type of music to consider is a tropical band. Known for unique styles like Caribbean music, a tropical island wedding band provides a lot of unique and memorable sounds.

As you seek out options to book a tropical band for a wedding, learn about the various instruments the band will use to create authentic and entertaining live music.

Steel Drums

One of the most recognizable sounds from a Caribbean band is the steel drum. Instead of a flat top surface like most drums, a steel drum includes a hollowed steel pit that musicians drum into. The echoes and clangs from the steel drums make a distinctive sound.

A key element of a tropical island band is the use of multiple steel drummers to create unique sounds. The drummers could play in sync to amplify the sounds or go on their own rhythms to add layers of music. The drums are often loud enough to where no extra audio equipment is needed.

Different sized steel drums will create different sounds and provide unique music for a wedding. The drums are ideal for receptions and for large group dances.

Buleador Drums

If you hire a tropical island wedding band, one of the band members may play an instrument known as the buleador drum. The drum features a large wooden base and is typically wrapped with animal skin at the top. The drum makes a deep sound and is often comparable to a large bongo drum.

A buleador drum is an ideal way to start beats and create a booming background when combined with other instruments. Along with drumming the top, some players will bang on the side to create unique sounds up against the hollow wood.

Guiros

A hollowed-out piece of wood with carved notches on the outside is known as a guiro. The instrument is typically played with a wooden stick. A band member can move the stick up and down the ridges of a guiro to create a unique sound. The stick may also tap the flat side of the guiro to create a rhythm and provide background layers of music to a song.

The small instrument is often used by a lead singer who plays some notes during parts of a song with no lyrics.

When you book a tropical band, see what kind of instruments are available for your wedding and learn the sounds so you know what to expect.
